It's Sunday evening and another weekend is coming to a close. Tomorrow kicks off yet another work week, albeit a short one with the 4th of July holiday on Friday. It has been an extremely busy weekend, but I often think that we know no other way. So, here is my recap:
Friday Night:
Jeff and I met Eric, Robin, Wayne and Vicki at Doc Chey's for dinner. We had a lovely time and I am reminded that Vicki Mullen truly is one of the nicest and most genuine people I know. Wayne and Vicki had not eaten at Doc Chey's before and I'm thankful that they enjoyed it. It was pretty funny watching Wayne trying to learn how to eat edamame. After dinner, Robin, Eric, Jeff and I went to Cafe and Then Some for the show, "30 Years of Greenville". It wasn't one of their better ones and the highlight of that 2 1/2 hours was the dessert, Homemade Sin, a warm-baked chocolate chip cookie covered in ice cream with chocolate sauce and peanuts on top. We got home and hit the hay, knowing Saturday promised to be busy.
Saturday Morning/Afternoon:
Jeff and I woke up and planned a later-than-usual run. We wanted to approximate Peachtree temps as best we could and I wanted to run out at a new development off of Verdae Blvd. With construction going on, we anticipated having the entire place to ourselves, but were not sure just how much mileage we could in there. We wanted to go for 6.2, if possible. We packed up water and gatorade and headed out about 8:15 and the temperature was already 79 degrees with 80% humidity. The area was indeed deep enough to get in all the miles we needed and even had a beautiful park area which gave us a good place to park, along with restrooms and water fountains if we needed them. The first two miles went well and I felt good. I enjoyed running side by side with Jeff, something I don't often get the chance to do. At about 2.5 miles, we stopped to look at some homes that were under construction - big, beautiful homes. We started back out and made a brief stop at the car to get some water and I shed my shirt. By this time, the sun was in full force and the heat was getting unbearable. I am loving 6am more and more. At about 3.75 miles, I started to struggle. I had not eaten before my run (I know better!) and had taken in very little fluids. I told Jeff that I was going to slow my pace and try to get it together. There were times I had to walk and I ended cutting the run to 5 miles. So, for Peachtree, stopping at the water stops will be crucial, along with a very slow pace and just enjoy the experience. After our run, we picked up Heather and had lunch at Five Guy's, a special treat. We took her shopping for clothes for The Gauntlet, the church camp she'll leave for in two weeks. Thankfully we were able to get everything in two stops - Kohl's and Sports Authority. As much as I hate to shop, I enjoyed helping her pick outfits and seeing her light up when she came out of the dressing room in something she loved and knew looked good on her. We headed home to get ready for Live Free, Live Loud, the NewSpring Concert and fireworks display.
Saturday evening:
One of many great things about this event is that NewSpring would match every donation dollar for dollar and the money would be split among 3 charities. We got to the Anderson Civic Center and the parking lot was already filling up. The band would play at the amphitheater and people were packed in. As we were walking in, I saw my friend and former neighbor, Rhonda. We used to go to Brushy Creek together and got to be close before she married. I found out when I saw her before Christmas that she is now divorced. It is always great to see her. We sat up our chairs in the center and settled in to listen to the fantastic NewSpring band. Lee McDermett opened the show, playing a lot of his music from Matchlight in the Dark. Then the rest of the band came out and played both secular, mainstream music and contemporary worship songs. It was a great show!! The band wrapped up around 9:00pm and then the fireworks started. It was a display to rival any of the displays I've seen. Nothing is ever done halfway.
Sunday morning:
We slept in, a rarity for us. NewSpring was crowded and Perry promised to be pumped up. It was a baptism Sunday and they would baptize 32 people at the 11:15 service. I've been to churches that didn't baptize that many people in a year. Perry delivered on his promise - it was uncomfortable and challenging. He preached from I Kings 15:41-45 and it impacted me in a lot of ways. Perry challenged each of us to pray over the next 7 days for God to show us why He created us, what His plan for us is, what the next step He wants us to take, and that we will trust in Him and not ask for anything. Wow!! This is scary, especially facing my LSAT scores coming out. What if I am so off base with what I think He wants for me. But, the only way I can find out is to rise to the challenge.
After church, we went into Greenville to Wild Wing for lunch, followed by gelato, of course. The afternoon was spent relaxing and then took Heather home.
And so, this concludes my weekend. In a few minutes I'll be going to bed to get some sleep. Tomorrow morning, I'll get up early for a 3 mile run and then a busy day at work.
